Constructora Totem is a company in Costa Rica dedicated to the construction of civil works, internal finishes, remodeling, project management and consulting services.
The company was born in January 2009 by the civil engineer Roy Andrés Trigueros Gago.
We have professionals with extensive experience in the supervision and direction of civil engineering projects of great magnitude and complexity, offering services of excellence, high level of compliance and quality of service.
Constructora Totem S.A. has been selected by several consulting firms, private clients and the state to build their projects with great success in terms of quality, cost and time. We have worked in the industrial, commercial and residential sectors of our country with large-scale contracts.

Environmental Responsibility
The construction industry is the largest responsible for the consumption of fossil and natural fuels. Additionally, it is a major waste generator.
Despite the foregoing, construction, as an engineering area, is at the service of development and has indisputable social importance, by creating “products” intended to cover the basic and superior needs of society, such as: housing, drinking water, health, education, recreation, services, among others.
In order to ensure that the construction process generates a lesser impact on the environment, we must follow three verbs: reduce, conserve and maintain [Lanting, 1996].
The company, as a way of being responsible with the environment, tries to consider the following aspects in the construction processes:
- Reduce the consumption of available resources by recycling, reusing and working efficiently.
- Use multi-use forms whenever possible.
- Buy reforestation wood.
- Modular to avoid waste.
- Use chemical products that do not damage the ozone layer
- Avoid waste in the consumption of electricity and water.
- Optimize material transportation to reduce CO2 production.
- Reduce the production of solid waste and use authorized dumps.
To achieve a sustainable construction or one that generates less impact on the environment, the bad habits acquired for decades in the waste of natural resources must be eliminated. The mentality of the construction industry must be changed in order to give priority to recycling to avoid the extraction of raw materials.
OccuppationalL Health and Safety
For our company occupational health is a fundamental element that must be incorporated into all the construction processes of our company, so that they are done out safely. This generates an increase in productivity, a reduction in costs and a greater well-being of our employees, who are the greatest value of the company.
Preventive management principles and programs:
- Injuries are preventable
- Working safely is a condition of employment
- Perform a work only it is safe
- Do a risk matrix of each activity.
- Signaling and labeling: there is safety signaling and labeling in different areas of the projects.
- Personal protection equipment: specific personal protection equipment is used, according to a risk matrix defined by construction activity.
- Subcontractors: there are mandatory standards for our company’s subcontractors and they are required to be insured by the INS work risk system.
- Occupational safety inspector: depending on the magnitude of the project, the company assigns an occupational safety manager or inspector.
Active Community Partner
As part of the company’s social responsibility we have a plan to reduce the school dropout of our employees’ children and we are allies of Fundación Acción Joven.
To reduce the school dropout of the children of our employees, our human resources department is in charge of investigating which parents require professional and financial help to ensure that they keep them studying. They explained the importance of education in their children and the inheritance that this represents, also help them in the supplies like uniforms, books and others.
As part of the requirements to continue obtaining this incentive from the company, parents are asked for their children’s grades in order to attend to their academic progress.
Early school leaving is an undesirable phenomenon for a society that considers the education as a key element, both in individual promotion and in collective well-being.
With Fundación Acción Joven, our engineers have been speakers in different training talks for the members of “La Esquina” project. La Esquina is a social project dedicated to help young people in conditions of high social risk.
Additionally, we collaborated in the “Recreation Zones” project at the Alajuelita High School, for which we were in charge of the design, paperwork, construction and part of the financing. This project consisted of the creation of a pleasant, cool place, with tables and a roof where the students could spend their breaks and lunches.
